The ERASMUS Intensive Language Courses (EILC) are specialized courses in the less widely used and less taught languages organized in the countries where these languages are used as teaching languages at higher education institutions. The EILC give ERASMUS students the opportunity to study the language concerned for 2 to 6 weeks with the aim of being prepared for the ERASMUS mobility period abroad.
EILC in 2013/14
In 2013/14 the EILCs may take place in the following countries, for the eligible languages in brackets:
Belgium (Dutch in the Flemish Community), Bulgaria (Bulgarian), Croatia (Croatian), Cyprus (Greek), Czech Republic (Czech), Denmark (Danish), Estonia (Estonian), Finland (Finnish and Swedish), Greece (Greek), Hungary (Hungarian), Iceland (Icelandic), Italy (Italian), Latvia (Latvian), Lithuania (Lithuanian), the Netherlands (Dutch), Norway (Norwegian), Poland (Polish), Portugal (Portuguese), Romania (Romanian), Slovakia (Slovak), Slovenia (Slovenian), Spain (Basque, Catalan, Galician and Valencian), Sweden (Swedish), Switzerland (Italian) and Turkey (Turkish).
The EILCs are open to students who have been selected for an Erasmus study/placement period in the LLP/Erasmus programme in the academic year 2013/14 in one of the European countries listed above.
Who can participate?
- Students registered at a Higher education institution holding an ERASMUS University Charter, who have been selected for an ERASMUS study or placement period in one of the European countries. Students whose main subject of study is the language of the country organizing the EILC are normally not eligible to participate.
- Comenius and Grundtvig Assistants can also participate, provided that there is a surplus of places on a course.
How to apply?
Erasmus students
- Applications shall be submitted electronically to the students' home institution, which will be responsible for forwarding the application to the EILC organizing institution.
- Please note that application does not automatically entitle the applicant to participate in an EILC.
Comenius and Grundtvig Assistants
- Applications shall be submitted electronically directly to the EILC organizing institution. A confirmation of the Comenius or Grundtvig Assistant's status from assistants' home NA must accompany the application.
- Please note that application does not automatically entitle the applicant to participate in an EILC.

- COMENIUS/GRUNDTVIG application form (Comenius and Grundtvig assistants apply directly to the EILC host institution.)
The EILCs take place during summer/ autumn 2013 and winter 2014. Courses vary in length according to country and the student's level of language knowledge, the maximum duration is 6 weeks with a minimum of 60 teaching hours. Participating students do not have to pay any kind of tuition fee. The home institution may award a supplementary Erasmus grant to Erasmus students for the duration of the course and the National Agency in Comenius/Grundtvig assistant's home country may award a supplementary grant. At the end of the course students will be asked to contribute to the evaluation of the course.
